Director Statement

The idea began with a small observation: an empty can rolling across a bus floor. A bus is a strange little world; people with different stories, headed in the same direction for a while, then parting ways. It reminded me of how we live, sharing time and space but each living different lives. Historically, it’s often the small, absurd things that trigger larger events. Empty Can takes that idea—a falling can in a confined space becomes everyone’s business—and follows the ripple as things grow louder, messier, and strangely true to life. Set to Camille Saint-Saëns' orchestral piece Danse Macabre, the film gently and humorously exposes the absurd routines we mistake for progress.

이 작품은 버스 안을 굴러다니던 빈 캔 하나를 우연히 관찰한 경험에서 출발했다. 버스는 서로 다른 사람들이 한 공간에 모여 같은 방향으로 나아가지만, 출발지와 목적지는 모두 다르다. 이는 동시대를 살아가면서도 각기 다른 삶을 사는 우리의 모습과 닮아있다. 또, 커다란 사건은 종종 사소하고 예상치 못한 일에서 비롯되곤 한다. <빈 캔>은 우연과 오해, 이기심과 욕망이 뒤얽힌 인간 사회의 단면을 ‘버스’라는 공간과 하늘에서 떨어진 ‘빈 캔’을 통해 은유적으로 그려내며, 명쾌한 해답을 찾지 못한 채 같은 문제를 되풀이하는 우리의 모습을 생상스의 <죽음의 무도(Danse Macabre)>에 맞춰 해학적으로 그려냈다.
